Our Services Include:

Parts Preparation

Proper removal of all oil, dirt, metal oxidation, grease etc. is paramount in creating an exceptional finish. Depending on the size and material of the workpiece, proper cleaning can be done via chemical pre-treatment, sandblasting or burn-off oven.

Typical, chemical cleaning involves submersion or spray application. Sandblasting, or abrasive blasting is achieved through the use of a blast medium disbursed at high speeds onto the workpiece. Blasting medium can oftentimes be recycled and is highly efficient for steel parts. Additional blasting may be required to produce certain finish textures. Finally, we offer the burn-off oven as a standard method of preparation due to the ability to clean many parts at once with little or no pollution or hazardous waste.

Not all methods of preparation are appropriate for all projects. Please contact our experienced staff to discuss the most cost-effective and efficient option for your next powder coating project.

Project pretreatment types:

  • Sand Blasting
  • May be required for certain final finish textures
  • Chemical pre-treatment
  • Typically used on metal fabrication
  • Maybe more economical than sand blasting depending upon the project
  • Burn-off
  • Ability to clean many parts in one application with little environmental impact.

    • Thickness of the finishes can be controlled
    • Military Specifications available
    • No running or sagging of the finish
    • Minimum appearance differences between horizontal and vertical surfaces
    • Green Product: fewer volatile organic compounds (VOC) are released or evaporated into the air
    • Over spray can be recycled
    • Virtually any color can be created
    • Multiple colors can be applied in a single application allowing for blending and special effects.
    • Different textures can be created

Reduce Surface Preparation Time….did you know….

The use of powder coating with a wrinkle or kettle finish can reduce your surface preparation time. Typically, a fabrication shop will weld, cut and finish the part, then they will spend time grinding down the surfaces and use solvents to remove waste products.

By using a wrinkle for kettle finish, RHI Powder can handle the material pre-treatment process for you. Since we are able to apply a powder with a textured finish, time consuming and costly surface preparation time can be greatly reduced. Not only does a textured powder coating provide for a professional and classic look, but it also produces a finish that is more durable and tolerant to scratching than other finishes.

Stop by our Northern Nevada powder coating facility to see and feel the difference between the many textures and finishes we offer. Located in Carson City….just minutes from Reno, Sparks, Lake Tahoe, Gardnerville, Minden, Dayton and Fernley!

Is it Bad for the Environment?

Powder Coating is actually very environmentally friendly, much more than the standard solvent-based wet spray painting. Powder coating contains no harmful or damaging liquid solvents, harmful waste products, with virtually no air pollution or emissions. Since powder coating does not use solvents, VOC emission problems are eliminated. Additionally, with EPA regulation growing more stringent, powder coating is fast becoming the technology of choice for product finish applications. The reduction and elimination of these environmental issues associated with painting, save time and money in powder applications.

What is Powder Coating?
Powder Coating is an advanced method of applying a decorative and protective finish to virtually any type of metal, thru a sophisticated application process. Simply, this process utilizes a solvent-free dry mix of plastic resins, pigments and fillers that adhere to projects when they powder is exposed to heat.

The solid particles are electrostatically charged in a spray gun and applied by low velocity air onto the item. The charge holds the powder in place while the project is heated and cured in an oven. The powder coat mixture melts and fuses together creating an even and durable finish.

Why Should I Powder Coat vs Painting?
Powder coating provides an incredibly durable metal protection finish, which is much more resistant to scratching, fading, chipping, or wear; than any standard liquid / wet spray painting application. Colors stay brighter and are longer lasting.
What is Powder Coating Made of?
The powder used is a mixture of finely ground particles of pigment and resin; they are electrostatically sprayed onto the surface. The particles adhere to the grounded surface until the product is heated in a curing oven where it fuses into a smooth coating.
What Type of Powder Coating in Available?
Color selection is virtually unlimited with flat, satin, gloss, high gloss, metallic, candies, clear, iridescent, fluorescent, wrinkle, hammer tone, and glitter finishes just to name a few. Texture selections are also available ranging from smooth to wrinkled or matte finishes, there are also rough textures to assist with obscuring surface imperfections.
Where is Powder Coating Used?
Powder coating is used in various, expansive markets, to name a few: Appliance industry – on ranges, refrigerator, washers, dryers, water heaters, etc… Automotive industry – truck beds, radiators, wheels, handles, bumpers, hubcaps, etc… Household products – antennas, fixtures, golf clubs, bicycles, snowmobiles, exercise equipment, etc…
Do the Parts Have to be Cleaned and Rust Free?
Yes, we offer the service to sandblast, clean your parts for a fee; or you can bring your parts in prepped and ready for coating. Parts would need to be cleaned of any grease, rust or dirt; any contaminates may weaken the bond between the powder and surface.
Can you Powder Coat Parts That Have been Previously Treated or Painted?
Yes, we can. We would sandblast the parts, for a fee, to remove any old finish, dirt, or rust, ensuring the surface is ready to accept the powder.
What About Holes with Threads and Other Areas That Need to Stay Coating Free?
Areas can be kept coating free by application of high temperature masking to special surfaces on threads and high tolerance areas or high-temperature silicone plugs can be applied to threaded holes and shafts. Should your project require coating free areas, please contact our expert staff for more information.
Can Powder Coating Be Applied to the Body Filler?
Unfortunately, the use of plastic and resin body fillers is problematic and will cause bonding failures and bubbling due to the high oven temperatures required to properly melt the powder coating. Should your project require filling, fill any depressions with a torch using brass or a welding rod.
What is Clear Powder Coating?
Like clear coat wet paint, clear powder coating serves to protect the underlying finish adding depth and luster to the surface. The second coat of clear powder is added while the project is still hot and returned to the oven for second curing. Clear powder coating is ideal for projects that may be exposed to the elements for long periods of time and helps reduce damage and fading.
